7 Fun Facts About Pickleball

1. Pickleball Has Been Around for Almost 60 Years
Pickleball is not as new as you might think! The sport was invented in 1965 and has been around for almost 60 years now.
2. Pickleball Paddle Technology Evolution
Pickleball paddles were originally made of wood, but now have advanced technology to help with aerodynamics, impact absorption, and more! Imagine playing with a piece of wood instead of the paddles we have today.
3. The Ball has Holes
Unlike balls in most other sports, the pickleball "ball" has holes in it! This makes the speed of the ball much slower and allow for more control as well as fancy shots.
4. Pickleball is Played Internationally
The International Federation of Pickleball governs international pickleball play, with countries such as the US, Canada, Spain and more all participating in international play.
5. Good Sport for Older Players
70% of the pickleball player base is over the age of 60! Compared to most other sports, this shows that it is extremely favorable to play pickleball at all ages.
6. Named After a Dog
The sport is named after Joel Pritchard's dog, Pickles. There is no other association to pickle anywhere in the sport!
7. Explosive Growth in Players
As of 2020, the sport has over 4.2 million players in the USA. Compared to 2.6 million in 2016, pickleball has exploded in popularity in the recent years.
